Blip Festival 2012 is this weekend, from Friday, May 25, to Sunday, May 27, at Gramercy Theatre. Celebrating the electronic chiptune genre, which uses the sounds made by retro electronics, like video game consoles, to make music, is put together by 8bitpeoples.

This is the sixth year of the festival.

Along with music sets from such artists as MisfitChris, Batsly Adams, and Graffiti Monsters, the festival also includes daytime workshops for musicians looking to hone their blip skills. Go to to sign up for workshops.

Musical sets begin at 8 p.m. on each day; Gramercy Theatre is located at 127 East 23rd Street, between Park Avenue South and Lexington Avenue, in the Gramercy neighborhood of Manhattan. Individual-day tickets are $25 each, while three-day passes are $55.

8bitpeoples is a record label producing chiptunes music. As MSNBC points out, “One of the main reasons for [the genre’s] popularity is how the audio is reminiscent of the sounds that many of us were bombarded with as children, at least those of us who grew up with a NES. Chiptunes has definitely played a key role in the old school gaming revival that has taken root in popular culture, even if the names of the innovators of the movement are still lost among the masses.”
